The Cleveland Browns have a brand new look at QB for 2010

Blogged under Positional Previews, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by admin on Friday 28 May 2010 at 1:41 pm

The Cleveland Browns blew up the QB position in the off-season keeping only 24 year old Brett Ratliff (a Eric Mangini favorite).  It won’t be as painful to watch the Browns knowing that Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson won’t be taking any snaps EVER again for the Browns.  35-year old Jake Delhomme was signed to come in and start for the Browns at QB in 2010.  He had his worst year in the NFL last season for the Panthers who let him go.  Delhomme played in 11 games for the Panthers last season and he completed 178 of 321 passes (55.5%) for 2,015 yards with 8 TD passes and 18 INTs (59.4 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 17 times for 60 yards (3.5 ypc) last year.  Delhomme has now played in 97 games in his NFL career and he has completed 1,630 of 2,755 passes (59.2%) for 19,892 yards with 123 TD passes and 94 INTs (82.1 QB Rating).  Delhomme has also carried the ball 167 times for 330 yards (2.0 ypc) with 7 TD carries.  Delhomme has a career record as a starting QB of 54-38 (58.7%) during the regular season and he has led his team to the Super Bowl once almost beating the Patriots in a epic game.  The Browns hope that Delhomme has something left in the gas tank because he is the kind of leader that they have been looking for to run the offense.

29-year old Seneca Wallace was acquired by the Browns for a 7th round pick so they didn’t give up much to bring in a Mike Holmgren favorite.  Wallace played in 13 games for the Seahawks last season and he completed 78 of 120 passes (65%) for 700 yards with 3 TD passes and 2 INTs (81.9 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 16 times for 2 yards (0.1 ypc) with 1 TD run last year.  I think that the Browns are going to get Wallace on the field a lot even if he’s not the starting QB as he can really be a weapon in the Wildcat because he is a good runner.  Wallace has now played in 48 games in his NFL career and he has completed 333 of 556 passes (59.9%) for 3,547 yards with 25 TD passes and 14 INTs (83.1 QB Rating).  Wallace has also carried the ball 54 times for 214 yards (4.0 ypc) with 1 TD carry in his career.  Wallace has a career record of 5-9 (35.7%) as a starting QB in the NFL.

The Browns will likely carry 4 QBs on the roster this season.  24-year old Brett Ratliff was part of the Browns’ haul for Mark Sanchez last season.  But the scary thing is that the Browns didn’t give Ratliff a chance last season despite having nothing to lose by doing so.  Colt McCoy was a 3rd round pick out of Texas this April in the NFL Draft.  He could very well be the Browns’ QB of the future.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE BROWNS QBs in 2010:  C

The Cleveland Browns sign kicker Shaun Suisham

Blogged under Free Agent Additions, Bloglockers, Front Page, Big Browns News, General by admin on Wednesday 19 May 2010 at 4:40 pm

The Browns have signed 28-year old kicker Shaun Suisham.  Suisham played in 14 games for the Redskins & Cowboys last season in which he connected on 20 of 24 field goals (83.3%) and 25 of 26 extra points good for 85 points.  He has now played in 57 games in his NFL career and he has made 87 of 110 field goals (79.1%) and 101 of 103 extra points in his career good for 362 points.  The Browns signed Suisham to give them insurance in case incumbent Phil Dawson fails to show up for training camp.  If Dawson doesn’t show up he is a fool because Suisham is good enough to beat him out if he gets behind.  I like this signing for the Browns.

UPDATE:  (6/18/2010) - The Browns have released Suisham after Phil Dawson reported to camp.

The Cleveland Browns sign TE Alex Smith

The Browns have signed 27-year old TE Alex Smith.  Smith played in all 16 games for the Eagles last season in which he caught 3 passes for 25 yards (8.3 avg).  He has now played in 74 games in his NFL career and he has caught 132 passes for 1,277 yards (9.7 avg) with 11 TD grabs.  Smith will likely be competing with Robert Royal for one roster spot on the Browns in 2010.

The Cleveland Browns select DE Clifton Geathers in the 6th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 9:30 pm

The Cleveland Browns select DE Clifton Geathers out of South Carolina with the 186th overall pick (6th round) of the NFL Draft.  Geathers is a big guy at 6′7″, 299 pounds and he runs a 4.98 40 as he is a good athlete for his size.  But, he’s still learning as a football player and he probably should have stayed in college for 1 more year.  Geathers played in 12 games for South Carolina last season and he had 41 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss and he had 3.5 sacks.  He played in 35 games in his three years at South Carolina in which he finished with 72.5 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss and 6 sacks.  Geathers is going to take time for the Browns to develop as he was a reach in the draft.

The Cleveland Browns select WR Carlton Mitchell in the 6th round

Blogged under Bloglockers, The Draft Report, Front Page, General by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 9:22 pm

The Cleveland Browns selected WR Carlton Mitchell with the 177th overall pick (6th round) of the NFL Draft.  Mitchell is a big guy at 6′4″, 210 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40.  Mitchell played in 11 games (10 starts) last season at South Florida and he caught 40 passes for 706 yards (17.7 avg) with 4 TD grabs.  He played in 37 games (18 starts) in his three years with the Bulls and he caught 105 passes for 1,648 yards (15.7 avg) with 9 TD grabs.  Mitchell will likely have a great chance to make the Cleveland Browns’ roster in 2010 as they have a huge need at WR.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was starting before the 2010 season is over.
