Cleveland Browns 23, Tennessee Titans 17

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by admin on Monday 31 August 2009 at 7:17 pm

The Browns played a solid all-around game against the Titans Saturday Night and they were rewarded with a win.  Brady Quinn was very sharp in this game as he completed 11 of 15 passes for 128 yards with 1 TD pass.  Derek Anderson followed him in the game and he completed 7 of 11 passes for 77 yards.  Richard Bartel finished up for the Browns at QB by completing all 3 of his pass attempts for 40 yards.  Rookie RB James Davis led the Browns in rushing in this game with 28 yards on 5 carries (5.6 ypc).  He also caught 4 passes for 27 yards (6.8 avg) in this game.  Jamal Lewis was also busy carrying the ball 10 times for 23 yards (2.3 ypc) and catching 4 passes for another 36.  Braylon Edwards was the leading receiver for the Browns in this game with 51 yards on 3 catches including a TD.  The Browns finished up this game with 312 total yards on offense (75 rushing, 237 passing).

Safety Michael Adams led the way for the Browns in this game with six tackles.  But it was OLB Alex Hall who was the standout as he made 2 tackles and intercepted a Vince Young pass that he returned 11 yards for a TD.  The Titans finished up with 355 total yards in this game (83 rushing, 272 passing).

Cleveland Browns 27, Detroit Lions 10

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 10:13 pm

The Browns pushed the Lions around last Saturday Night in Cleveland.  The Browns raced out to a 20-0 lead behind the QBing of Derek Anderson.  Anderson completed 8 of 13 passes for 130 yards with 1 interception in this game.  Brady Quinn followed D.A. and he completed 3 of 5 passes for 29 yards.  Brett Ratliff had a night to forget for the Browns in this game as he only completed 1 of 4 passes for 7 yards and he lost a fumble.  Rookie RB James Davis was the star of this game for the Browns as he rushed for 116 yards on 12 carries (9.7 ypc) with a 81-yard TD run.  Jamal Lewis added 23 yards on the ground on 7 carries (3.3 ypc) with a TD scamper.  Braylon Edwards led the Browns in receiving in this game even though he only caught 1 pass……for 34 yards.  The Browns used 9 different receivers in this game with not one of them catching more than 2 passes.  The Browns finished up this game with 348 total yards (194 rushing, 154 passing).

Linebackers Kamerion Wimbley and Kaluka Maiava led the way for the Browns in this game with 6 tackles apiece.  The Browns held the Lions to 288 total yards of offense (102 rushing, 186 passing) in a solid all-around effort.  They also played well on special teams as Joshua Cribbs returned a punt 84 yards for a TD.

The Cleveland Browns jettison three veterans

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Front Page by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 11:24 am

The Cleveland Browns have released TE John Madsen, DE Melili Purcell and OT George Foster.  None of these players should come back to haunt the Browns as they have some depth at each of the positions that they play.  Of this bunch, Foster will have the best chance of hooking up with a new team.

The Cleveland Browns sign safety Tra Battle

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 11:23 am

The Browns have signed 24-year old safety Tra Battle.  Battle played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Cowboys and Chargers last season and he finished with 15 tackles.  Battle is on the small side at 5’11″, 173 pounds so his best chance is to make the team by playing good on special teams.

The Cleveland Browns sign TE Nate Jackson

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 11:21 am

The Browns have signed 30-year old TE Nate Jackson.  Jackson is a converted WR playing TE so he’s a pass catcher and not much of a blocker in the running game.  Jackson played in 10 games (3 starts) for the Broncos last season and he caught 11 passes for 84 yards (7.6 avg) with 1 TD grab.  In his six years in the NFL, Jackson has played in 41 games (4 starts) in which he has caught 27 passes for 240 yards (8.9 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  Jackson has some upside and he can play some WR and help out on special teams so it’s possible that he can make the Browns’ roster.

UPDATE:  The Browns have cut Jackson after less than a week as they didn’t like what they saw out of him.

The Cleveland Browns have signed OT Corey Hilliard

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 11:18 am

The Browns have signed 24-year old OT Corey Hilliard to a 1-year deal.  Hilliard had just been released by the Colts.  The 6’6″ 300 pound Hilliard played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Colts last season.  In two seasons with the Colts, Hilliard played in only 5 games starting none of them.  He will be nothing more than a backup player if the makes the roster.

The Cleveland Browns sign DE/DT Brian Schaefering

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by admin on Saturday 29 August 2009 at 11:16 am

The Browns have signed 26-year old defensive lineman Brian Schaefering.  The 6’4″, 295 pound lineman has no game experience in the NFL but he was with the Jets for a bit last season and that’s likely why Coach Mangini is giving him a tryout.  Don’t expect much out of him if he even makes the team.

Green Bay Packers 17, Cleveland Browns 0

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by admin on Wednesday 19 August 2009 at 5:24 pm

The Cleveland Browns looked awful in this game.  Brady Quinn looked the best of the Browns’ QBs in this game but that isn’t saying much as he completed 7 of 11 passes for 68 yards with 1 interception.  Derek Anderson’s appearance in this game was very brief as he threw 2 incomplete passes (one of which was a pickoff).  Brett Ratliff finished up this game completing 7 of 13 passes for 84 yards with 2 pickoffs.  Josh Cribbs led the Browns in rushing in this game with 29 yards on 1 carry.  He also caught 2 passes for 30 yards (15.0 avg).  TE Aaron Walker led the Browns with 3 receptions for 48 yards (16.0 avg) in this game.  The Browns only had possession of the football for 20:04 of this game and that’s simply pathetic!  They only had 191 yards of total offense (59 rushing, 132 passing) against the Packers last Saturday Night.

Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson led the way for the Browns’ defense in this game with 7 tackles.  DE Marcus Benard also had a solid game with 6 tackles and a sack.  Rookies Coye Francies (CB) and OLB/DE David Veikune each picked off a pass apiece.  The Browns allowed 392 yards (230 rushing, 162 passing) and that is totally unacceptable!

Cleveland Browns’ WR Donte’ Stallworth is suspended for the 2009 season

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Front Page by admin on Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:17 pm

The NFL has suspended 28-year old WR Donte’ Stallworth for the 2009 season without pay because of his drinking and driving accident that left a man dead in Miami.  The Browns won’t miss Stallworth as he was fragile last season and awful when he did play.  Stallworth played in 11 games for the Browns last season and he caught 17 passes for 170 yards (10.0 avg) with 1 TD grab.  At least the commissioner of the NFL came down hard on Stallworth who got off light from the judicial system.  The hope here is that he never wears a Browns’ uniform again.

The Cleveland Browns release Shaun Smith

Blogged under Big Browns News,Bloglockers,Front Page by admin on Saturday 15 August 2009 at 5:13 pm

The Browns have released 27-year old NT/DT Shaun Smith.  Smith played in 11 games for the Browns last season and he made 36 tackles and forced a fumble.  In two years with the Browns, Smith played in 26 games in which he made 98 tackles, defensed 3 passes, had 2 sacks and forced 2 fumbles.  Smith’s biggest problem in Cleveland was that he had a hard time getting along with other players and coaches.  The Browns forgave him of his right with Brady Quinn last season but they couldn’t let him get away with disrespecting coach Bryan Cox.  He was quickly signed by the Lions.
