The Cleveland Browns fire GM Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel

The Browns had to fire the GM and head coach after this season and they did exactly that.  Phil Savage was not the great talent evaluator that he had a reputation for as he didn’t give Crennel enough players to work with.  But, Crennel was also a lousy head coach.  He finished with a 24-40 record in four years and he was a stunning 0-8 against the Steelers.  Crennel never showed much emotion on the field looking like he was thinking of what he was going to eat for dinner instead of what plays might work.  Bill Cowher already decided that he’s not interested in coaching the Browns but Bill Parcells is reportedly getting the itch to come back to coaching and the Browns’ job might appeal to him.  Only time will tell who the Browns hire as their new head coach but I hope that he’s not a rookie NFL head coach.  The Browns have tried a college coach (Butch Davis), a offensive co-ordinator (Chris Palmer) and a defensive co-ordinator (Romeo Crennel) since they have returned to the NFL and none of them worked out well.  With that in mind, they need to make a splash and hire someone who has been there before.

Pittsburgh Steelers 31, Cleveland Browns 0

The Browns finished up the 2008 season with another pathetic performance in Pittsburgh last Sunday losing 31-0.  The Browns’ lone highlight of this game was when linebackers Willie McGinest and D’Qwell Jackson made a sandwich of Ben Roethlisberger who left the game on a stretcher with a concussion.  Jackson led the way for the Browns’ defense with 15 tackles in this game but it didn’t matter much in the end as the Steelers rushed for 176 yards on 35 (5.0 ypc) and they also threw for 193 yards.

The Browns didn’t even try to score in this football game as they finished with only 126 yards of offense.  Jamal Lewis was the only player on offense (besides the O-Line) that came to play against the Steelers.  He carried the ball 23 times for 94 yards (4.1 ypc).  Bruce Gradkowski really sucked in his first and hopefully last start in his career with the Cleveland Browns.  He only completed 5 of 16 passes for 18 yards with 2 interceptions (one of which was returned 32 yards for a TD by Steelers’ safety Tyrone Carter.  The Browns finished the 2008 season in last place in the AFC North with a 4-12 record.
