The Browns have turned to an old nemesis to start at running back for them. Jamal Lewis has been brought in on a 1-year deal to take over as the main man in their running game. Lewis is a bulldozer of a running back at 5′11″, 245 pounds who does his best work between the tackles. Jamal Lewis played in all 16 games last season for the Ravens and he carried the ball 314 times for 1,132 yards (3.6 ypc) with 9 TD runs. He also caught 18 passes for 115 yards (6.4 avg) with ) TD grabs. Lewis has had a very good NFL career to date and he should be motivated because he’s working on a 1-year deal. Lewis has played in 91 games (87 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 1,822 times for 7,801 yards (4.3 ypc) with 45 TD runs. He also has caught 160 passes for 1,365 yards (8.5 avg) with 2 TD grabs.
Jason Wright will return as the backup running back for the Browns. He’s not very skilled but he plays hard and that means a little something. Wright played in 13 games (3 starts) last season for the Browns and he carried the ball 62 times for 189 yards (3.0 ypc) with 0 TD runs. He also caught 6 passes for 82 yards (13.7 avg). Wright hasn’t had much experience or success at the NFL level yet in his career. He has played in 18 games (3 starts) in his career and he has carried the ball 76 times for 226 yards (3.0 ypc) with 1 TD run. He also has caught 9 passes for 97 yards (10.8 avg) with 0 TD grabs.
Jerome Harrison was a rookie last season and he played great in the pre-season but only sparingly in the regular season. Harrison played in 10 games (1 start) as a rookie and he carried the ball 20 times for 60 yards (3.0 ypc). He also caught 9 passes for 47 yards (5.2 avg). It’s possible that Harrison could push Wright for the backup job or he could win the role of 3rd down back as he seems to be a decent receiver.
