Browns forget they have a game and lose 30-0 to Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 26 November 2006 at 10:38 pm

The Browns looked as if they thought they had another bye week today.  This was one of the most pathetic performances from an NFL team this season.  Charlie Frye completed 18 of 29 passes for 186 yards and 4 INTs!  Jerome Harrison led the Browns in rushing with 3 carries for 18 yards.  Jason Wright carried the ball 5 times for 12 yards (2.4 ypc).  Dennis Northcutt finally got some playing time on the offense and caught 3 passes for 61 yards.  Kellen Winslow was busy with 6 grabs for 52 yards.

The defense was on the field too long because of the awful play of the offense.  Rookie LB D’Qwell Jackson led the Browns with 15 tackles.  S Sean Jones (11 tackles) and LB Andra Davis (11 tackles) each had busy days.  The Browns did well against the Bengals running game as they held them to 99 yards rushing on 35 carries (2.8 ypc).  The Bengals torched the Browns secondary all game long as they completed 27 of 34 passes for 289 net yards passing.

The Browns were completely dominated and fall to 3-8 on the season.  The defeat got so bad that Braylon Edwards and Charlie Frye had to be separated on the sideline.

Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The Battle for Ohio, Part II.  The Bengals handled the Browns pretty easily in week #2 of the season, 34-17, but the Browns beat them up physically.  The Bengals are coming off a win that broke a 3-game losing streak.  The Browns lost a heartbreaker to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they have looked much better of late.

The Bengals will try to pound the Browns defense with Rudi Johnson (826 yards rushing).  The Browns allow 136.9 yards rushing per game and 4.8 yards per carry.  After the Bengals establish the run, it will be “Ocho Cinco” time.  Chad Johnson has been pretty good this season (57 rec, 932 yards), but we’ll see if he has “alligator arms” after Brian Russell made him a bloody, incoherent mess in the last meeting between these teams.  The Bengals must do a good job of keeping Kamerion Wimbley (6.5 sacks) away from Carson Palmer, who gets rattled when he gets hit.

The Browns hope to have Reuben Droughns back for Sunday’s game.  Droughns has said that his injured foot is feeling alot better and that he more than likely will give it a go.  The Browns need him, because he’s the kind of back that hurts the Bengals.  The Bengals have allowed 123.2 yards rushing per game and 4.2 yards per carry.  If the Browns have a running threat and the tackles keep the Bengals Ends (Justin Smith & Robert Geathers) away from Charlie Frye, he could have his best game as a pro.  The Bengals allow 254.4 net yards passing per game, so Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards should have big games.

This game will be a high-scoring game, but I have to side with the Bengals because of Rudi Johnson who’s been kryptonite to the Browns in his career.

Browns fall apart in 4th quarter and fall 24-20 to Steelers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 20 November 2006 at 5:04 pm

Only the Browns could lose a game where they out-play an opponent for three quarters and lose the game.  Charlie Frye had a decent game as he completed 17 of 27 passes for 224 yards and carried the ball 5 times for 27 yards (5.4 ypc).  Jason Wright had a solid game subbing for Reuben Droughns (who missed the game due to injury) with 18 carries for 74 yards (4.1 ypc).  Braylon Edwards caught 7 passes for 137 yards and almost caught a Hail Mary on the last play of the game.  Kellen Winslow pitched in with 4 catches for 36 yards.

Andra Davis (8 tackles), Brodney Pool (8 tackles) and Ralph Brown (7 tackles) led the way for the defense….but it was Daven Holly and Willie McGinest that played the best.  Daven Holly had 5 tackles and 2 INTs…one of which, he returned 57 yards for a TD.  Willie McGinest had 5 tackles, a sack and an interception.  The Browns held the Steelers to 77 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.9 ypc).  The Steelers completed 25 of 44 passes for 261 net yards passing.

The Browns should have won this football game…..but Bill Cowher out-coached Romeo Crennel (which isn’t hard to do).

Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 17 November 2006 at 1:24 am
The Pittsburgh Steelers won last week against the Saints to break a 3-game losing streak.  The Browns won in Atlanta and are 2-1 since Maurice Carthon was fired.  The Browns have revenge on their minds after the Steelers whipped them 41-0 on Christmas Eve last season in Cleveland.

The Steelers will try to get back to “Steeler football” and run the ball again like last week.  Willie Parker (847 yards rushing) has given the Browns fits in the past.  The Browns run defense is soft as they allow 143.6 yards rushing per game and 5.0 yards per carry.  After the Steelers establish the running game look for them to attack the Browns’ cornerbacks who were expected to be back-ups this season but because of injury have been starting.  The Browns actually have a pretty good pass defense and Roethlisberger will have to know where safety Sean Jones is at all times as he has 5 interceptions already this season.  Also, look for the Browns to be blitzing their first round pick (Kamerion Wimbley) alot to try to rattle Roethlisberger into mistakes.

This will probably be the game that the Browns open up the playbook.  The Steelers pass defense has been weak all season long as they allow 211.7 net yards passing.  If the Browns can pick up the Steelers blitzes….and that’s a big if….then they will have alot of success throwing the ball down the field.  The Steelers corners have been getting torched all year long.  Reuben Droughns will also get his share of carries because the Browns have been a running team first with Jeff Davidson calling the plays.

This should be a good football game.  The QB that turns the ball over less will win this game.

Browns win tough one on the road 17-13 over Atlanta

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 12 November 2006 at 7:08 pm

The Browns won this football game despite the Falcons running 70 plays on offense to only 49 for the Browns!  The Browns offense really didn’t play that well today.  Charlie Frye completed 16 of 22 passes for 165 yards and a TD.  Frye also carried the ball 4 times for 28 yards.  Reuben Droughns was busy with 21 carries for 54 yards (2.6 ypc) and a TD, he also lost a fumble while the Browns were in scoring range.  Kellen Winslow had a great game with 5 catches for 90 yards.  Braylon Edwards caught 3 passes for 31 yards and a TD.  Steve Heiden caught 4 passes for 24 yards.

Andra Davis led the way on the defense with 9 tackles.  Kamerion Wimbley was shadowing Michael Vick and had 4 tackles and a sack.  Brodney Pool (6 tackles, interception) and Sean Jones (interception) each played really well as the secondary played a great game as a unit.  The Browns allowed the Falcons to carry the ball 29 times for 149 yards (5.1 ypc).  The Browns did play well against the pass as the Falcons only completed 16 of 41 passes for 197 net yards passing.

The defense really played a great game despite the yards they gave up.  This was a great win for the Browns as they are now 2-1 with Jeff Davidson calling the plays on offense.

Leigh Bodden doubtful

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Friday 10 November 2006 at 12:49 am

Leigh Bodden will likely sit out Sunday’s game with the Falcons.  Look for Ralph Brown, Daven Holly and Brodney Pool to get all of the playing time and corner and nickel back.  This hurts a little because Bodden is their best defensive back.

Cleveland Browns vs. Atlanta Falcons

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Friday 10 November 2006 at 12:46 am

The Cleveland Browns have looked a little better on offense with Jeff Davidson calling the plays as they have averaged 22.5 points per game with him calling the plays.  The Falcons have won two of their last three games, but they’ve given up 95 points in those 3 games.

Look for the Browns to run Reuben Droughns at the start of the game to keep the Falcons defense honest.  Droughns (418 yards rushing, 3.2 yards per carry) is having a rough season so far, but he should find some running room against the Falcons who allow 4.0 yards per carry.  The Browns will then attack the Falcons safeties who have been giving up alot of yards.  If the Browns protect Charlie Frye, there is a good chance he will have one of his better games of the season.  The Falcons have allowed 243.9 net yards passing per game and that is horrible.

When the Falcons have the football, look for them to be conservative and run the ball alot.  The Browns allow 142.9 yards rushing and 4.8 yards per carry so the Falcons should have little problem moving the ball.  I have a feeling that Michael Vick will hurt the Browns far more with his legs than his arm this week.  The Browns have a pretty decent pass defense, but Vick will probably get the ball to Alge Crumpler (30 rec, 430 yards) a few times.

Look for this to be a high scoring football game.  It’s a game the Falcons should win, but you could have said that last week against the Lions too.  Football is not played on paper, so you never know.

Is Charlie Frye the starting QB of the future for the Cleveland Browns?

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Wednesday 8 November 2006 at 4:43 pm

I think Frye will determine one way or the other whether he is the future for the Browns at QB in the second half of the season.  He is an exciting player to watch, but he makes more bad plays than good ones so far in his career.  Frye has completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,565 yards with 8 TDs and 12 INTs.  Frye’s QB rating is a poor 69.2 this season, which is way below average.  Frye is a good runner, as he has carried the ball 30 times for 117 yards (3.9 ypc) with 3 TDs.  Frye needs to do a few things a little bit better that would help him grow as a player.  The offensive line for the Browns hasn’t played well, but Frye also needs to get rid of the ball quicker as he has been sacked 29 times already this season!  Another thing that Frye needs to do is to throw the ball away more often.  He likes to throw the ball over the middle of the field while rolling towards the sideline….and he needs to stop doing that as it has resulted in way too many interceptions that have cost the team!

Browns give good effort but lose 32-25 to Chargers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Sunday 5 November 2006 at 11:39 pm

The Browns gave a good fight in San Diego, but the Chargers were just too tough.  Charlie Frye completed 25 of 43 passes for 236 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.  Frye also carried the ball 5 times for 27 yards (5.4 ypc), but he lost a fumble that was returned for a TD!  Reuben Droughns had a hard time with the Chargers defense, carrying the ball 19 times for 36 yards (1.9 ypc).  TE Kellen Winslow caught 11 passes for 78 yards.  Joe Jurevicius had his best game for the Browns, catching 3 passes for 76 yards.  Braylon Edwards had a good game too, catching 6 passes for 61 yards and a TD.

Rookie linebacker Kamerion Wimbley had 1.5 sacks, but the defense had a rough time.  The Chargers carried the ball 23 times for 190 yards (8.3 ypc)!  The Chargers completed 19 of 28 passes for 191 net yards passing.

The offense is looking better without Carthon around, now the Browns need to work on that defense.

Ryan Tucker doubtful for Sunday

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Friday 3 November 2006 at 4:43 pm

It’s looking very likely that Ryan Tucker will miss his second game in the row this week with mysterious “flu-like” symptoms.  Kelly Butler is likely to start Sunday for the Browns in Tucker’s place.  Butler started last week too.  Butler did start all 16 games for the Lions last season so the Browns aren’t in as bad as shape as it seems.
