Browns defense plays great in 20-13 win

Everyone was anxious to see what the offense would look like without Maurice Carthon calling the plays, but the defense rose up and took almost all of the attention.  Rookie LB Kamerion Wimbley led the way with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery.  CB Leigh Bodden returned and had 4 tackles and defensed 3 passes.  SS Sean Jones was flying all over the field and posted 5 tackles, defensed a pass and had 2 INT.  The Browns played tough against the run, which had been a huge weakness to date.  The Jets ran the ball 27 times for 88 yards (3.3 ypc).  The Browns secondary played fantastic holding the Jets to 105 net yards passing.  The Jets only completed 11 of 28 passes!

Charlie Frye managed the game well, completing 15 of 22 passes for 141 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, he also carried the ball 5 times for 19 yards (3.8 ypc).  RB Reuben Droughns was the main man today for the Browns, carrying the ball 33 times for 125 yards (3.8 ypc) and a TD.  TE Kellen Winslow continued his fine play this season with 7 catches for 76 yards and a TD.

The special teams allowed a 99 yard kick-off return for a TD, other than that though…..it was a very satisfying day for the Cleveland Browns.

Browns vs. Jets

The New York Jets are surprisingly 4-3 after finishing 4-12 last season.  Before you get to excited about that….the cumulative record of the teams the Jets have beaten is 5-22!  The Cleveland Browns are 1-5 and are the kind of team that the Jets have had success against.  The Browns, however, could be inspired by the fact that they have a new offensive co-ordinator (Jeff Davidson) calling the plays.

Look for the Jets to come out running the ball against the Browns with their suddenly good running attack.  Rookie Leon Washington will get alot of carries but Kevan Barlow will do the heavy lifting near the goal-line.  The Browns allow 144.2 yards rushing per game and 4.6 yards per carry.  Qb Chad Pennington could have success throwing the ball to Laveranues Coles (42 rec, 566 yards) and Jerricho Cotchery (30 rec, 418 yards) against a secondary that is playing guys like Ralph Brown and Daven Holly at corner.

Coach Davidson couldn’t pick a better opponent to start his job as offensive co-ordinator against.  The Jets can’t stop the run (142.4 yards per game, 4.5 yards per carry) or the pass (229.9 net yards passing per game)!  Look for the Browns to come out running the ball.  Reuben Droughns should finally have a good game as he only has 257 yards rushing this season.  The Jets really don’t have much of a pass rush, so Charlie Frye could actually have a good game throwing the ball.  Look for short shots to Kellen Winslow (33 rec, 317 yards) and Joe Jurevicius to set up long passes to Braylon Edwards (22 rec, 357 yards).

This game will be a very close game in which the outcome could come down to one big play.  I have a feeling that one of the kick-returners will have a game-altering play in this game.  Hard for me to pick a side here, it would have been easier if Maurice Carthon had not been fired, because there’s no telling what the Browns offense will be up to.

Browns by the numbers

The Browns offense has been pitiful so far this season and it cost offensive co-ordinator Maurice Carthon his job…..and rightly so!  The Browns only average 14.7 points per game, and that’s especially horrible given all the good field position that their kick returners have given them this season.  The Browns only average 68.2 yards rushing per game and 3.2 yards per carry.  The Browns average 177.0 net yards passing per game and complete 61.7% of their passes.  The Browns need Charlie Frye to make quicker decisions and try to get the ball downfield to their playmakers.

The defense is allowing 21.0 points per game, which isn’t too bad for them because the defense is always on the field and the secondary is severely beaten up.  The Browns can’t stop the run, allowing 144.2 yards rushing per game and 4.6 yards per carry.  That is unexceptable!  The Browns allow 192.8 net yards passing per game, but they would give up much more if teams didn’t have such an easy job running the ball on them.  The Browns allow opponents to complete 54.6% of their passes.

Hopefully the new offensive co-ordinator can get the offense going and help protect the defense a little by keeping them off of the field.

Browns CB to miss season

Starting cornerback Gary Baxter will miss the rest of the season after rupturing the patella tendons in each knee.  He did so while awkwardly landing while defending a pass on Sunday against the Broncos.  This is a huge loss for the Browns who will now have to play Ralph Brown and Daven Holly until Leigh Bodden can return from an ankle sprain.

Rejoice Browns fans….Maurice Carthon finally got fired tonight!

Randy Lerner and Phil Savage wanted Romeo Crennel to fire Carthon during the bye week, but Crennel resisted.  After Sunday’s debacle, Crennel was reportedly told to fire Carthon…..or he’ll be right behind him out the door!  The Browns are only averaging 14.7 points per game and 245.2 yards per game, which is last in the NFL.  Offensive Line Coach Jeff Davidson will take over the play calling duties for the Browns.  It’s about time that the Browns made a move with the offense, because Maurice Carthon is the worst offensive co-ordinator I have ever seen in my life!
